JOURNAL POST 2

If you had to choose one of the characters to be your friend who would you choose and why?

In life there are very few people who can be trusted, therefore whomever you choose to befriend should be selected with caution. After frantic brainstorming, I’ve come to the conclusion that Allie Caulfield is the top contender for being my friend.  Although he may be several years younger than me, his level of intellectual capacity is certainly enlightening. I and Allie have mutual interests, which are to get a well-rounded education, write poetry, and stay out in the dark in society. “The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere.” (38) I feel that it’s rare to find someone who is interested in poetry, given the influences of today’s generation.

In my opinion, this quote is an excellent portrayal of the alpha student. Instead of whining over a poor test score, Allie improves his academic ego by composing poetry. The key factor however, is that Allie did it through the nightmares of Leukemia. In my opinion, people should think more like Allie in regards to taking initiative. On a daily basis, teens are growing more accustomed to the concept of popularity and are not enjoying the true luxuries of life. This quote is crucial to the novel because it essentially is about the person who Holden Caulfield loves the most, his genius brother, Allie. Reading the book, I can sense that Holden uses Allie as his inspiration for his decisions.  Generally, it relates to the real world in that there should be more authentic people like Allie, someone who does something because they’re passionate. In summary, being friends with Allie would be a feasible approach to new horizons.
